Jerry Wayne Shelton

Jerry passed away on Saturday evening, May 29, 2010 at home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer for the past 2 ½ years. He was born on July 5, 1948 in Bristol, VA. Jerry was a life-long member of North Bristol Baptist Church.

Jerry was a 1966 graduate of Virginia High School with post graduate work. He worked at Universal Enterprise as a draftsman before entering the United States Coast Guard where he served for 30 years. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he worked at Economy Boat Lines where he served as the Homeland Security Coordinator and Instructor. He wrote and developed the training manuals coordinating the maritime shipping laws with those of each individual state’s laws for the Mississippi River, until the time of his death.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, April Denise Maglothin and husband Andy, grandsons Steven and Brandon Maglothin, all of Atoka, TN. One brother, Butch Shelton of Bristol, VA, and first cousins Betty Rictor, David Burnette, and Jim Cadle, all of Bristol.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 3, 2010 in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will follow in Susong Cemetery with Military Honors by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Andy Maglothin, Ronnie Foy, Dwight Kirk, Norman Smallwood, Danny Fee, Eric Godfrey, Herb Hampton, Jerry Skeens and Fred Scott. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., Wednesday at Akard Funeral Home.
