Peggy Denton, age 71, of Bristol, VA went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 21, 2013 at her sister’s Judy Lingerfelt’s home.
She was born in Bristol, VA on March 16, 1942 to the late Robert and Eula Faye Smith Denton.
Before she retired she was employed at the Shriners Hospital in Lexington, KY. She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Bristol, VA.
She was a loving mother, sister, aunt and caretaker of her mother and earned the nickname “Miss America”.
Survivors include her son, Eric Cantrell; two grandchildren, Gabriel Cantrell of Lexington, KY and Blaze Joyner of Bristol, VA; four sisters, Wilma Cross and husband, Conley; Betty Shaffer and husband, Frank; Judy Lingerfelt and Gaye Newmarch; four brothers, John Denton and wife, Jean; Lonnie Denton and wife, Pamela; David (Joe) Denton and wife, Donna; and Jeffrey Denton and wife, Janie all of Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to her caregivers, Brenda Malone and Ida Hopson and Caris Hospice and especially Marsha and Angie.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brandon Canter and Rev. Roger Ball officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Chad Lingerfelt, Travis Lingerfelt, Gabe Shaffer, Jacob Denton, Shane Pratt and Drew Smallwood. Honorary pallbearers will be Conley Cross, Frank Shaffer, Eddie Taylor and Dr. Jason Moore. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home or any time at her sister’s, Judy Lingerfelt home, 6081 Bexley Dr., Bristol, VA.
