Albert J. Vance

February 15, 1927 - March 26, 2018

Albert J. Vance of Bristol, VA passed away on Monday, March 26, 2018 surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Bristol, TN, the son of the late John C. and Ida H. Vance. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George W. Vance, Raymond S. Vance and John C. Vance Jr. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked in the finance and banking industry, retiring from Signet Bank as a regional auditor and officer of the bank’s holding company. He enjoyed participating in sports, watching sporting events as a spectator, big band era music, movies and traveling. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America in numerous leadership roles, enjoyed hiking and camping and was the chairman of the Klondike Derby in Bristol for 44 years. He was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Shirley Starks Vance; son, Albert Joseph Vance, II (Joey) and wife, Tracy C. Vance; grandchildren, Trey Vance and Janalyn Vance; two nephews and one niece. The family would like express a special thanks to Dr. Fred Greear, Dr. Jonathan Dixon, Dr. Pierre Istfan, Rachel Freeman, Mary Mason and Scott Hughes. Also a special thanks to the volunteer Scouters who manned stations at the Klondike Derby for many years. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, March 29, 2018 in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Thompson officiating and eulogy by Council Executive, David Page, Sequoyah Council , Boy Scouts of America . Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Bristol VFW and U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Rick Armstrong, Sam Belew, Tom Haws, Phil Keller, Jack Linder and Larry Wagner. Honorary pallbearers will be Archie Monk, Lynn Shipley and John Tickle. The family will receive friends from 6:00 -8:00 P.M., Wednesday at Akard Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be sent to Euclid Ave. Baptist Church, 900 Euclid Ave., Bristol, VA 24201 or to the Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America, 129 Boone Ridge Dr., Johnson City, TN 37615 Condolences and memories may be left for the family at akardfuneralhome.com Akard Funeral Home, (423) 989-4800 is serving the Vance family.
