C.R. “Dick” Hopkins, Jr. “Let us not mourn that such a man died. Let us rejoice that such a man lived.” – General George S. Patton C.R. “Dick” Hopkins, Jr., Lt. Colonel United States Army Reserves, passed away June 23, 2022, at his home. Dick resided in Bristol his entire life except for his time in active military service. Dick was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School class of 1954 and East Tennessee State University class of 1959. He had been a member of State Street United Methodist Church since 1965 and regularly attended the Fidelis Sunday School Class. He was a United States Army Reserve instructor in the Command and General Staff College designated as Professor of Military Science and Tactics. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel US Army Air Defense Artillery after 28 years of commissioned service. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club of Bristol with 50+ years of membership and the recipient of the George Hixon Fellowship Award in 2010 for service to the community. And from 1950-1990, was the general manager and co-owner of Automotive Service and Supply. Dick identified with Albert Einstein’s quote “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” He never lost his love of learning and was a voracious reader. He saw the world as an endless source of wonder. He loved studying geography and astronomy, played piano by ear, and was an artist and photographer. And he was well-known among family and friends for his quick wit and wry sense of humor. A man of honor and integrity, he was dedicated to his family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angela Atwell Hopkins; daughter, Sherry Hopkins; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Teresa Hopkins; beloved granddaughter, Emily Hopkins; aunt, Edith Leonard; and several cousins, and nephews. Along with his parents, Cecil and Ruth Osborne Hopkins, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Richard Hopkins; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda Hopkins. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 28, 2022, in Glenwood Cemetery with Pastor Laura Rasor officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by The DAV 39 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends afterward from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Akard Funeral Home.
