Charles McKinley Crabtree passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. Charles was born at Chatham Hill, Smyth County, Virginia. He was a proud graduate of Rich Valley High School, Class of 1950, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed by Virginia Department of Labor and Industry 1959 – 1989, retiring as Regional Field Supervisor for the Division of State Labor Law Administration. Charles was a longtime member of Bristol Family YMCA and received the Y’s Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1994 and 1997. He was an animal lover, an avid reader, a lover of classical music, and an accomplished woodworker. His favorite activities were playing his acoustic guitars and fishing with his brothers. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Creed C. and Katherine Harris Crabtree; beloved grandparents, Joseph and Rachel Williams Harris; his sister, Katherine C. Horton; and his twin brothers, Raymond L. and L. Roy Crabtree. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Chance Crabtree; daughters, Sandra (Bill) Newell of Okanagan Falls, BC and Tammy (Mike) Salmon of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Amy (Jim) Fodor, Rodney Newell, Amanda Newell and John Salmon; great-grandson, Nicholas Fodor; three brothers, Joseph M. Crabtree and Larry E. Crabtree of Fredericksburg, VA and William S. Crabtree of Purcellville, VA. He is also survived by a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, including his mother-in-law, Dorothy Chance and special grandniece, Sophie Culberson. The family extends special thanks to caregivers, Weisa Manis, Linda Scardo and Brenda Howington; to the CNAs, therapists and nurses of Advanced Home Care and to the CNAs, nurses, and chaplain of Wellmont Hospice. Because of the compassionate care Charles received from these individuals, he was able to remain at home during his illness. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Riverside United Methodist Church, 428 Riverside Church Road, Saltville, VA. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., Friday at the funeral home.
