I did not know Earl James, but I knew his parents, siblings, cousins, and grandparents. Mrs. Hicks and her husband Adam lived across the street on Matt Street from my grandmother, Kate Bullock. The street was so narrow that the two ladies could sit on their porches and talk to one another. I played in her yard with Linda and Carol Sue many times. Sometimes, when I was staying with my granny, I would go over and visit Granny Hicks, following her around her house and talking. I loved that she had a side porch that opened onto her yard, the very place where we played "Swing the Statue" and "Pretty Girl Station", old games that my granny taught us. Sweet memories.
