Mary Sue Carter Allen, also known as “Mama Sue”, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born on January 24, 1928 at White Top, VA to the late Carl and Faye Weaver Carter. She was a graduate from Mount Rogers High School in a class of only three students and later from Radford College. On November, 22, 1951, she and Jack Allen of Abingdon were married. Mary Sue was a teacher, retiring after 42 years. The majority of her teaching experience was with the Bristol, VA School System. After her retirement, she was a very proud “Pink Lady” at Bristol Regional Medical Center for 22 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; her sister, Ann Emerson and brother-in-law, E.O. Greer. Mary Sue is survived by her daughter, Duffy Allen Stout and husband, David of Chapin, SC and her most beloved buddy, grandson, Andy Stout of Prosperity, SC. Other survivors include a sister, Jean Greer; nieces, Carla Proffitt (Herb), Theresa Walker (Randy), Sandy Cumbow (Don); nephew, Joey Emerson (Tammy); great-nieces, Amber Tran (Mike), Celita Hastie (Kenny), Laura Poff (Ryan) and Jennie Whitaker (Rob) and special cousins, Roger Weaver (Carol) and Rick Weaver(Susie). The funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Homesley officiating. A private interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, VA. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M., Saturday prior to the service.
