Mary Katherine Boy “Katty” Williams, age 88, of Bristol, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born on September 5, 1927 in Detroit, MI to the late Jasper Lee and Edith O’Dell Boy. When she was five years old, the family moved to Bristol, VA where she spent the remainder of her life. She was a lifelong member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she served in many capacities, including working with the Windsor Meals on Wheels mission until a few weeks before her death. Following graduation from Sullins College, Katty began her career with the Virginia Highway Department (now VDOT), where she met her husband, the late William M. “Bill” Williams, Jr. After she and Bill married, she worked as the bookkeeper for her father’s and uncle’s filling stations. She then became the assistant to Bristol Virginia City Manager, Bob Morrison. Later, her career included a part-time return to VDOT and working at Southern States Co-op in Bristol. Katty’s favorite hobby was knitting. Friends and family still treasure the many blankets, sweaters, hats, scarves, dishcloths and Christmas stockings that she knitted over the years. She was also an avid Virginia Tech fan, especially during the Hokies football season. Survivors include her son, John Edward Williams and wife, Ann of Lynchburg, VA; daughter, Susan W. Moore and husband, Philip of Blacksburg, VA; four grandchildren, Lauren Williams of Lynchburg, VA; Brian Williams of Christiansburg, VA, Jason Moore and wife, Julie of Yorktown, VA, and Hunter Moore and wife, Anne of Roanoke, VA and; four great-grandchildren, James, Journey, Hunter Manning and Henry, and many special cousins. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 24, 2016 at Akard Funeral Home with a graveside service following in Glenwood Cemetery with Dr. Mark Hutton officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, The Mission Fund, 1100 Windsor Ave., Bristol, TN 37620 or to the Bristol Life Saving Crew, 1601 Euclid Ave., Bristol, VA 24201. Susan and John Edward, Mary Katherine was my first cousin. I am Daris Boy Martin. My father was Jack's brother and we lived at Boones Creek. I am now 80 years old and live in Radford, Virginia. I know Susan that you live in Blacksburg, but have not been able to find your phone number. My daughter and son-in-law live here in Radford. My husband was a minister and we lived for many years in North Carolina. My husband was Dale Martin and he just passed away in December. I have kept up with Mary Katherine through various family members--Sidney Patton, mostly. I was sorry to hear of her death. I spent last week in Bristol and Johnson City with my sisters.
