Robert L. Peters, 72, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away June 9, 2022. A native of Wyandotte, Michigan, he was born August 8, 1949 and was preceded in death by parents Ed and Bonnie Sarchet Peters, nephew David, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Those who will cherish his memory include his beloved wife Melissa Galo Peters; son Adam (Jenn) Peters of Celebration, Florida; stepsons Logan (Rachel) Warren of Hiltons, Virginia, and Hunter (Catherine) Warren of Bristol, Virginia; grandchildren Nick and Ollie Peters, Benson and Asher Warren, Dixie and Remi Warren; siblings Michael (Jan), Tom (Sue), Carol (Tim), and Marie; nieces and nephews Eric, Jarrett (Rachel), Jesse (Betsy), Ben (Lisa), Sam (Katie), Donovan (Theresa) and Devon; and several great nieces and nephews. Robert worked as a Fire Chief at National Steel at Great Lakes Works, was promoted to Department Manager of Security and Fire Services of Great Lakes Works under US Steel. He served most recently as Emergency Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Health for Mount Rogers Health District. He took great joy in spending time with family and “making memories” at family gatherings filled with children. He enjoyed going to concerts and musical performances. Robert shared his passion for air shows with Adam, and they attended many together. He passed his love of Top Gun to his son, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He and Melissa spent many happy hours traveling, pursuing adventures and new experiences to celebrate their life together. Robert loved Virginia with its fresh air, mountains, and peacefulness. Creative and mechanically gifted, in his free time he worked on his Jeep, go-cart, and anything he could weld. Some of his welding projects included bird feeders and “Melvin,” the large bird sculpture. He knew how to fix anything and always shared his knowledge. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Highlands Fellowship Church, Abingdon, VA with Pastor Craig Barber officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M., prior to the service at the church. There will be a Celebration of Robert’s life held at a later date, in Michigan.
